Episode 61 - The Winning Edge (Batman Beyond S01E09)

Screen Shot 2018-08-14 at 9.15.35 PM.png

"Surely," you thought. "Surely the decrepit corpse of that Winning Edge episode that AATW said was missing enough audio to throw them into a months-long hiatus would never be strong enough to be seen on the RSS feed. Surely, that is the case." You thought wrong, fool! The Audio Entropy triage team (read: Mitchell with some truly unforeseen spare time) has slapped this sucker full of venom and it is READY, dear listener, to shamble on into your eager ears. Listen in, as a new generation of teens in Neo Gotham experiment with horribly debilitating drugs in the shadow of the supervillain who was that drug's marlboro man, all in the name of scoring more futureball points.

Note: The main audio conceit of this episode, if it annoys you, lasts for roughly 30 minutes. The rest of the ep after that is quality regardless!

Your Komix Korner recommendation this week are Batman: Year One by Frank Miller, David Mazzucchelli, and Richmond Lewis (those colors, y'all), which works out alright for an episode that isn't exactly timely, and Southern Bastards by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour. Jasons! Oh, also Graham read the county fair issue of Tom King's run on Batman, which was timely, but no longer is. All-time single issue of a comic, says he.

Episode 52 - It's Never Too Late (Batman: The Animated Series S01E12)

never too late.png

It's Never Too Late....to record a podcast! The Watchtower Gang is back for a more recently recorded episode to get this podcast train back onto it's sepia toned tracks. Zack's back in the host chair, which leaves the rest of the boys free to profess their love of cannolis, talk about Archie Andrews' history with meth and enjoy the gift of new fatherhood.

In Gotham City, Batman is a minor player this week as the bulk of the story focuses on two old mob bosses and homaging as many old movies as the writers could manage. Head's up, at the end of the episode they boys discuss their thoughts on Avengers: Infinity War. Spoiler alert: everyone thought Doctor Strange ruled.

Your Komix Korner recommendations this week are Thanos Wins by Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw and The Death of Captain Marvel by Jim Starlin and Steve Engleheart.

Episode 48 - Be A Clown (Batman: The Animated Series S01E09)

batthumb.png

Everybody loves clowns! Especially the citizens of Gotham City! No terrible baggage there!

We meet Gotham's favorite clown, Jekko, who DEFINITELY isn't the Joker and DEFINITELY didn't kidnap the Mayor's son after crashing a children's birthday party. Also, Batman is here.

As we talk about how much we all love clowns (especially Graham) we watch Batman and pals recreate The Prestige, rant about Nick Spencer some more and talk about Hellboy for a solid 30 minutes.

Your Komix Korner recommendations this week are Southern Cross by Becky Cloonan and Andy Belanger and Hellboy by Mike Mignola.

Episode 47 - Dead Man's Hand (Batman Beyond S01E08)

kissy kissy.png

Grab your favorite neon colored juice beverage and get down to the dance floor because we're back in (Neo) Gotham with our ol' bud Terry McGinnis.

This time around, however, Terry's got some Teen Troubles and is wrapped up with the mysterious new girl in town who, spoilers, is actually a supervillain??? Witness their whirlwind romance over the course of about a day and a half accompanied by the single greatest musical choice thus far on our fine podcast.

We also discuss General Mills (General Mills), whether white girl dreads are ever acceptable and George Lazenby's career as James Bond.

Your Komix Korner recommendations this week are Rashomon - A Commissioner Heigo Kobayashi Case by Victor Santos and Saga by Brian K Vaughn and Fiona Staples.

Episode 45 - The Savage Time (Justice League S01E24-26)

JLice.jpg

It's time! For! The season one finale! Of! Justice League! That's right folks, today's episode means there's only... like, 300-some-odd episodes of the DCAU to go. Buckle your butts in for temporal shenanigans, as Kobik rewrites reality so that Nick Spencer never penned Secret Empire. As a result of this chrono-meddling, however, the earth's Nazi quotient actually somehow increases, and it's up to the time-and-reality-displaced leaguers to punch each and every one of them.

The boys on the watchtower try to maintain their sanity through the three-parter in order to indicate cogent thoughts through sensibly constructed sentences; they sort of succeed. Astute listeners may note that Cameron's audio is in fact an unabridged audiobook of a military encyclopedia. Rest assured, I did not put the wrong audio track in. This was all he talked about. Also, at one point everyone is really mean to Mitchell for no reason! What the heck, guys.

Episode 39 - P.O.V. (Batman: The Animated Series S0107)

Screen Shot 2017-07-21 at 8.29.33 PM.png

It was supposed to be an ordinary podcast... but it didn't stay that way. Somethin' happened, somethin' that nobody seems able--or willing--to explain, and the Watchtower boys were left with their asses in hand and a handful of corrupted audio files, also, in their hands. Now I'm here--not to put anything else in their hands, but to sift through the rubble and discover which of these four chumps is responsible for the audio event which knocked everybody's favorite DCAU podcast off-schedule. Cause one of 'em... ain't tellin' the truth.

During the course of my investigation the suspects will opine on contemporary Spider-Man cinema, Castlevania's monster content, tommy gun composition, and a multitude of other incriminating topics. The Batted Man of Gotham also makes an appearance, if you even believe in that old hoax.

Your Komix Korner recommendation this week is My Hero Academia by Kohei Horikoshi. Also whatever's in your local funny papers; it's workmanlike stuff but it still takes skill.

Episode 28 - Pretty Poison (Batman: The Animated Series S01E05)

One of Batman's biggest villains makes her debut as we return to Gotham City circa 19XX to meet Poison Ivy!

While everyone's favorite sexy plant-based character (sorry, Swamp Thing) gets introduced, we are also treated to some early anime-ass Batman animation, Batman's voyeur fetish and everyone's least favorite group impersonation: Nick Nolte!

Your Komix Korner/The Fuck You Read?'s recommendation for this week is Moon Knight by Warren Ellis, Declan Shalvey and Jordie Bellaire!

Episode 25 - The Last Laugh (Batman: The Animated Series S01E04)

Hey everyone, this is Zack! Mitch was unable to upload the episode this week, so I had to fill-in. Unfortunately, I wasn't on this one! So I'm gonna make my best guess about what happens:

The crew is joined by Kendall, our first non-bonus episode guest, as they discuss the second Joker-focused episode of Batman so far. And there's only been 4 episodes! Cameron probably references no less than 3 but no greater than 5 BibleThings, Graham sniffs a bunch and Mitch is the only thing that keeps people coming back.

Your Komix Korner/The Fuck You Read?'s recommendations for this week are Detective Comics by James Tynion IV and Eddy Barrows and Spider-Man: The Lost Years by J.M. DeMatteis and John Romita Jr.

Episode 23 - The Brave and the Bold (Justice League S01E13-14)

The full crew returns for an extra-length episode filled with gorillas, mind control, and a concerted effort to kill Zack by the rest of the boys. We finally meet one of the DCAU's greatest villains, Grodd, and Flash finally begins to develop a little bit beyond simply being The Horniest Man Alive. Still pretty dang horny, though. We also discover the mysteries of Mitch's tortellini, go far too in depth on the history of gorillas and struggle to find a single motion picture that Cameron has actually seen.

Your Komix Korner/The Fuck You Read?'s recommendations for this week is The Old Guard by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez.

Episode 21 - Meltdown (Batman Beyond S01E05)

FREEZEPEEZY

Y'all, this show is good. This week, we get our first of the few multi-generational Batman Beyond villains in one Dr. Victor Fries! Yes, to his great chagrin, Victor is still alive, and it's up to our Batmen to... protect him?! *record scratch* Elsewhere in the episode: Zack grapples again with his arch nemesis, Audio Oopsies, Cameron consumes a lavish banquet on-mic, Mitchell reluctantly certifies the concept of wrestling entertainment on the whole as "good," and we collectively babble about Fire Emblem ad nauseum. Be sure to stay tuned until the very end of the episode, dear listener, when our very own Graham AKA Grahamuel AKA "Grahamsta" delivers us... to paradise.

Your Komix Korner/The Fuck You Read?'s recommendation for this week is Pluto, by Naoki Urasawa, Osamu Tezuka, and Takashi Nagasaki.

Episode 17 - Paradise Lost (Justice League S01E08-09)

Hail and well met, adventurers! Due to budgetary concerns, the league find themselves scraping together all the loose animation frames they can find as they're sucked into episode writer Joseph Kuhr's D&D campaign. And I mean why not? It's got a giant snake in it!

During today's Wonder Woman-centric episode, Mitchell shares a story of snow day heroics, Cameron dons his dungeon master hat to critique Felix Faust's wizarding tactics (but praise Hades' villainous rhetoric), and Graham becomes indignant that baka gaijin continue to interpret Hades' as villainous at all. [music continues]

Your Komix Korner/The Fuck You Read?'s recommendation for this week is Kingdom Come, by "Wet" Mark Waid and Alex Ross.

Bonus Episode 2 - Invasion of the Secret Santas! (Batman: The Brave and the Bold S01E04)

Happy Holidays, y'all! We got you a BONUS EPISODE! Sorry, you can't return it for store credit. In the spirit of the season, Zack, Graham and Mitch watched the wonderful Christmas episode of the always amazing Batman: The Brave and the Bold. In between the fistfights with Santa robots and Batman reindeer chases we discuss our sordid childhood Christmas habits, the similarities between highly advanced androids and the common duck and Graham is overtaken by the Spirit of Christmas itself! Plus, Michael Caine returns! For, like, a whole minute!

Bonus Episode 1 - Batman: Under the Red Hood

IT'S A BONUS EPISODE, NERDS. After a long delay, you can finally hear Zack, Graham and Mitch discuss fan-favorite Batman flick, Under the Red Hood! It's very good! (It is one, one is too many.)

Episode 10 - Golem (Batman Beyond S01E04)

Welp. This one is a bit of a bummer. Recorded the day after the US Presidential Election, Cameron sits this episode out as Zack, Graham and Mitch find the cyberpunk dytopia of Batman Beyond hitting a little too close to home. We also discovered a cache of secret anime, ponder whether Doctor Strange vapes and discover that high schoolers are the worst no matter what century you're in.
