Episode 49 - Two-Face (Batman: The Animated Series S01E10-11)

twoface.png

We've got a two-fisted two-parter this week, as Batman meets one of his most iconic foes for the first time: Two-Face!

As the crew is impressed by Harvey's commitment to being as on-brand as possible, they're also pleasantly surprised as BTAS appears to be hitting its stride after a rocky start. Along with great performances and solid action, this episode also features the return of Batmanime, with noticably better production values.

Alongside the episode, we also discuss Criss Angel, Cameron makes an actual movie reference, the Avengers: Infinity War trailer, Mitch takes a one-man improv class, and Zack loses his mind trying to control the show.

Your Komix Korner recommendations this week are Batwoman by Marguerite Bennett and Steve Epting and Batman: Creature of the Night by Kurt Busiek and John Paul Leon.

Legends of the Watchtower - Issue 2: Other Dimensions (Masks actual play)

Behold! There, in the window of the comic’d shop! Why, it’s the second issue of Legends of the Watchtower, our actual play bonus podcast of the roleplaying game Masks! Yes, dear reader-listeners, the tale of teens continues in this audio file. MARVEL as our young heroes live their un-masked lives--TREMBLE as Mitchell introduces an accidentally, extremely convoluted piece of background information that might be relevant two story arcs from now--EMPATHIZE with our heroes, as they endure advice and admonishment from their elders! Those are the three verbs you may do. Wait, no, you can also WAIT PATIENTLY for our heroes to roll some dice! (I swear one of them rolls at some point. Listen, it’s just easy to get caught up in the scene, folks.)

Legends of the Watchtower - Issue 1: The Heroes of Tomorrow (Masks actual play)

The oft-alluded-to secret bonus project arrives! Join us, friends, as Zack, Graham, Cameron, and Emily embark on a tabletop adventure cooked up in the E-Z bake oven that is Mitchell's mind. We're playing Masks, a narrative-first roleplaying system designed by Brendan Conway which captures the spirit of everyone's favorite teen-team superheroism. I'm talking your Young Justice, your Runaways, your New Mutants; come and listen, as our hosts step into the sneakers of Halcyon City's empowered and angsty youth! One of the heroes has a rude tude--but I won't spoil which one! That's all the info you get in this blurb, suckers. You gotta listen to the episode itself for the good stuff.

Episode 48 - Be A Clown (Batman: The Animated Series S01E09)

batthumb.png

Everybody loves clowns! Especially the citizens of Gotham City! No terrible baggage there!

We meet Gotham's favorite clown, Jekko, who DEFINITELY isn't the Joker and DEFINITELY didn't kidnap the Mayor's son after crashing a children's birthday party. Also, Batman is here.

As we talk about how much we all love clowns (especially Graham) we watch Batman and pals recreate The Prestige, rant about Nick Spencer some more and talk about Hellboy for a solid 30 minutes.

Your Komix Korner recommendations this week are Southern Cross by Becky Cloonan and Andy Belanger and Hellboy by Mike Mignola.

Bonus Episode 5 - Mailbag: Rebirth

8f51b8ac7c5adb46e97d198608daac09.jpg

Hey y'all! We couldn't get our dumb schedules to overlap this week, so to tide you over until our next great DCAU installment, we've got our first ever mailbag episode!

That's right! Just over an hour of us forming technically coherent answers to questions you, dear listener, asked! Joining us in this endeavor is friend of the show and first-ever two-time guest: Emily! Sub-par audio quality is due to having to use our back-up for Graham-related reasons.

Episode 47 - Dead Man's Hand (Batman Beyond S01E08)

kissy kissy.png

Grab your favorite neon colored juice beverage and get down to the dance floor because we're back in (Neo) Gotham with our ol' bud Terry McGinnis.

This time around, however, Terry's got some Teen Troubles and is wrapped up with the mysterious new girl in town who, spoilers, is actually a supervillain??? Witness their whirlwind romance over the course of about a day and a half accompanied by the single greatest musical choice thus far on our fine podcast.

We also discuss General Mills (General Mills), whether white girl dreads are ever acceptable and George Lazenby's career as James Bond.

Episode 45 - The Savage Time (Justice League S01E24-26)

JLice.jpg

It's time! For! The season one finale! Of! Justice League! That's right folks, today's episode means there's only... like, 300-some-odd episodes of the DCAU to go. Buckle your butts in for temporal shenanigans, as Kobik rewrites reality so that Nick Spencer never penned Secret Empire. As a result of this chrono-meddling, however, the earth's Nazi quotient actually somehow increases, and it's up to the time-and-reality-displaced leaguers to punch each and every one of them.

The boys on the watchtower try to maintain their sanity through the three-parter in order to indicate cogent thoughts through sensibly constructed sentences; they sort of succeed. Astute listeners may note that Cameron's audio is in fact an unabridged audiobook of a military encyclopedia. Rest assured, I did not put the wrong audio track in. This was all he talked about. Also, at one point everyone is really mean to Mitchell for no reason! What the heck, guys.

Episode 44 - The Forgotten - (Batman: The Animated Series S01E08)

biggis.png

The boys planned on checking in with their old pal Bruce Wayne this week, but end up following some dude named Gaff Morgan on an extended Cool Hand Luke homage featuring the World's Most Disgusting Human!

Struck with amnesia, Bruce gets caught up in a slave labor camp/gold mine run by the utterly vile Boss Biggis, with none of his Batman toys to get him out of the jam! It's...kind of a weird one, y'all.

We also discuss our new Eclipse-given super powers, experience some minor technical difficulties and talk about the current state of Big Two comic books for seriously around 40 or so minutes. It's a long one.

Your Komix Korner recommendations trifecta this week are The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars by Michael Dante DiMartino and Irene Koh, Doom Patrol by Gerard Way and Nick Derrington and Hi-Fi Fight Club by Carly Usdin and Irene Flores.

Episode 43 - Shriek (Batman Beyond S01E07)

THE YEAR, 20XX. THE PLACE, GOTHAM CITY. THE PODCAST, AIMLESS AS FUCK.

We're checking back in with good Ol' Terry and good Ol' Ol' Bruce in Batman Beyond, with yet another of Terry's burgeoning rogue's gallery entering the picture.

After a failed attempt to assassinate Bruce, Terry has to tackle his first solo case as Batman and take down the mysterious new sound-based assassin, Shriek. It's a pretty great one, including some of Beyond's most memorable scenes!

We also meet the newest member of our podcast, Fitch, learn proper Batman defense strategies for criminal goons and talk about how warm this episode would sound on vinyl, maaaan.

Episode 42 - Tools of the Trade (Superman: The Animated Series S01E12)

We've got a big one this week, team. In this Very Important episode of Superman, we meet Metropolis' 2 top cops, Bruno Mannheim makes a new friend and we are introduced to the greatest threat the DCAU has ever seen.

SCU's leader, Maggie Sawyer, and her top man, Dan Turpin, are forced to consider bringing in Superman on their investigation (something Turpin is wholly against) after Bruno Mannheim starts suddenly, mysteriously, packing far more firepower than he ever had before.

In between the earth-shattering revelations we experience Graham actively fighting against Skype, Mitch and Cameron threatening to leave and start a Baking themed podcast and a general low-level chaos. It's a hell of a week.

Episode 41 - Metamorphosis (Justice League S01E22-23)

Hope you like hearing about human garbage, friends, because this week's episode of Justice League is FULL OF THEM.

Besides our wretched hosts we've got: womanizer Rex Mason, aka Metamorpho (voiced by legitimately horrible human being Tom Sizemore), creepy Trumpian father Simon Stagg and incredibly inconsistent character John Stewart! It's a blast!

In between the refuse, there's a light, mostly decent episode of Justice League. We also talk about where Zack disappeared to last week, Graham's monster hunting skills and Mitch loses his GOD DAMN mind about our poor podcasting habits.

Episode 40 - They're Playing My Song (Static Shock S01E05)

Screen Shot 2017-07-25 at 8.12.59 PM.png

What's that, All Might? You want ME to inherit your tremendous power?! Gosh, and on the same day that I was crowned king of my hotel after Danny Rand bought a controlling stake in it... zzz... Oh, hey everyone. Graham, Cameron, and Mitchell here, using a device our close personal friend, Batman, invented to listen in on Zack's dreams. They're quite extravagant but a bit predictable. Intrepid host Zack is accidentally asleep while we're podcasting, you see, so we just wanted to check in through the power of Wayne Enterprises technology and make sure he's doing okay.

While Zack gets his beauty rest, the rest of us are enjoying an episode of Static Shock, ish. It's not a bad one, really! Rubberband Man exists now, and the world is enriched by his plucky verve and creative shapeshifting. The three of us, however, struggle to form a misshapen host-like form suitable for podcasting, eventually managing to talk Spider-Man (again!), start a book review pod-in-pod, and mourn the lost art of Crank Yanking.

Episode 39 - P.O.V. (Batman: The Animated Series S0107)

Screen Shot 2017-07-21 at 8.29.33 PM.png

It was supposed to be an ordinary podcast... but it didn't stay that way. Somethin' happened, somethin' that nobody seems able--or willing--to explain, and the Watchtower boys were left with their asses in hand and a handful of corrupted audio files, also, in their hands. Now I'm here--not to put anything else in their hands, but to sift through the rubble and discover which of these four chumps is responsible for the audio event which knocked everybody's favorite DCAU podcast off-schedule. Cause one of 'em... ain't tellin' the truth.

During the course of my investigation the suspects will opine on contemporary Spider-Man cinema, Castlevania's monster content, tommy gun composition, and a multitude of other incriminating topics. The Batted Man of Gotham also makes an appearance, if you even believe in that old hoax.

Your Komix Korner recommendation this week is My Hero Academia by Kohei Horikoshi. Also whatever's in your local funny papers; it's workmanlike stuff but it still takes skill.

Episode 38 - My Girl (Superman: The Animated Series S01E11)

Graham's back after a leave of absence, just in time for us to check in on Smallville's favorite son and his long-lost sweetheart: Lana Lang!

As Clark juggles busting an arms trafficking ring with dealing with his former high school flame, we struggle to remember who exactly Graham is, debate whether or not Superman fucks, meet two fantastic one-off goons and have a chat about diversity in comics.

Your Komix Korner recommendations this week are Batman/Elmer Fudd by Tom King and Lee Weeks and Midnighter by Steve Orlando, Aco, David Messina and more.

Episode 37 - Next Gen (Zeta Project S01E05)

The Watchtower's on a skeleton crew this week, as Zack and Mitch are the only ones who could be bothered to show up for this episode of everyone's favorite show: The Zeta Project.

As they struggle to deal with just how bad Zeta is at the task he was literally made for the duo also chat about Zack's newfound My Hero Academia obsession, Mitch's past work history, proper Bucky identification and very accurate and good impressions of their missing co-hosts.

Episode 36 - The Main Man (Superman: The Animated Series S01E09-10)

We had to use the back-up recording for our episode this week, gang, so sorry for the sub-par audio. The boys are back in Metropolis, and this time we meet one of the DCU's most inexplicably enduring characters: Lobo!

As Big Blue and the Main Man butt heads, we discuss what goes into a good weird alien design, the absolutely INSANE soundtrack to this episode and some breaking Star Wars and Watchmen news.

Episode 35 - A Knight of Shadows (Justice League S01E20-21)

WE'RE BACK, Y'ALL. After an unexpected break due to the world conspiring against your favorite DCAU Themed Podcast, the boys have returned to the Watchtower to watch a....pretty mediocre episode of Justice League.

Minus Graham, but plus Etrigan, we watched the League throw down with Morgan La Fey and her bratty kid while J'onn has a Very Bad No Good Terrible Day. Other topics of discussion include: Remembering how to podcast, Jack Kirby and Stan Lee's DCAU counterparts, a brief foray into the Wonder Woman film and Zack's victory at the first Brawl Along the Watchtower tournament.

Bonus Episode 4 - Wonder Woman (2009)

Time for a bonus episode that definitely isn't tying into any sort of major motion picture release! The crew is joined by Emily (a different one!) for 2009's Wonder Woman animated film in our longest episode yet!

As we witness the origin of Diana, we also discover just how much of a garbage bag Steve Trevor is, just how baller as hell Artemis is, what happens when you introduce a third wrestling fan onto the podcast, Jeff Bezos' boons and curses, and chronicle Ares' descent into Maximum Anime.

Your BONUS Komix Korner recommendations are Lost at Sea by Bryan Lee O'Malley and Wonder Woman Annual #1 by Greg Rucka, Vita Ayala, Michael Moreci, Collin Kelley, Jackson Lanzig, Nicola Scott, Claire Roe, Stephanie Hans and David LaFuente.
